Summary

A mainstay of Tempe Artists Guild receives much-deserved recognition.

Sue Norton-Scott, one of the mainstays of Tempe Artists Guild, has enough energy to boost, not just art, but music and animal welfare as well.  She recently caught the eye of the editors of Chandler Living, which did a major piece on her work in so many domains.  Sue is a key member of Tempe Artists Guild’s Executive Committee and the lead on our website management and grant writing efforts.  Tempe Artists Guild is very happy to have her support and good ideas and provocative art.    This recognition is much-deserved.   We could not be prouder.

Going a little deeper, based on the article in Chandler Living by Laura McClure (April 2026 issue, p. 14: Harmony and Hue: The Artful Life of Sue Norton-Scott)…  Sue came to Arizona in 1979, engaging in decades of teaching music and art to gifted students.  She is still active in teaching, as a faculty member at Rio Salado College and at New Hampshire University.  She and her husband Will also engage in canine education — having adopted a total of 6 Golden Retrievers.  They are dogless now, but Sue still volunteers extensively with Rescue a Golden.

On her music: “Sue is the rhythmic anchor of the Central Arizona Flue Ensemble, better known as CAFE Flutes.”  (Sue serves as the Director of Development for the ensemble and plays bass flute, which helps anchor their music.)  Their approach is to actively engage with listeners, allowing listeners to “truly experience the music rather than just observe it.”

On her art: “Sue is a celebrated mixed media artist…. her surrealistic images often feature objects attached directly to the canvas.” Sue’s work has appeared in galleries across the nation, from New York City and Brooklyn, to Chicago, Sacramento, and Seattle.  As members of the Tempe Artists Guild know, Sue works hard to help the rest of us become more successful artists.  Sue’s energy for organizing and grant writing is essential to the group.  And she does the same for CAFE flutes!

In conclusion: “Sue Norton-Scott’s life is a  masterclass in harmony… Her art challenges us to see the world differently, while her music invites us to enjoy it together.”…  “She is a neighbor who understands that the strongest communities are built on connection, creativity, and a willingness to share one’s gifts with others.”
