artist statement:

I look forward to getting to know you through one of my passions, painting.  It’s surprising how much painting reveals about a person, both the one who creates the painting, and the one who appreciates its beauty.  So, if you’re interested in my work, then we have a common thread.

I paint nature because it is thrilling to see the variety in moves, poses, colors, and contexts that our earth offers.  Light brings my images to life.  Plein air light – being out there with the elements, is best, though it poses some constraints.  Outside, nothing stands still, so you have to work quickly and simply.  For animals, working from a photo is usually necessary – they don’t like to pose.  Here my history with animals, not just my cats, helps.  For years I raised orphan creatures in upstate New York – raccoons, possums, squirrels, all sorts of birds and even skunks (briefly!).  That work gave me enormous respect for the intelligence and survival instincts of all animal life.  Perhaps I should extend that urge to live plants, which struggle to flourish in their own way.  I look forward to painting for you, and along our common thread of life-loving, world-loving art.
