Bio: Scott was raised in Anchorage, Alaska and moved to Arizona in 2003. His “wife for life” Margie and their Australian cattle dogs Flash! and Buddy live a simple, abundant life and he considers himself “the luckiest man in the universe.
“Many of Scott’s compositions could best be described as “organic abstract” while others lean heavily towards photo realism. They are influenced by his Alaskan roots and current Southwest home. He loves working with oil pastels. Scott says “oil pastels are an extremely versatile and dynamic medium that allows a wide range of expressions that standard oil and acrylic paint could only wish for. “
In 2018 Scott was selected to be the Official Oil Pastel Artist for Savior-Faire / Sennelier, maker of the world’s finest oil pastels. He is the first and only artist to hold that title.
In 2019 Scott was selected as an instructor at the prestigious Scottsdale Artists School. He is their first and only oil pastel instructor.
Title of presentation: Oil Pastels
Oil pastels are probably the most misunderstood and under-appreciated medium there is. When you ask the average person if they know what they are the response is typically “a mixture of oil paint and soft pastels”. When you say “oil pastels” to most artists they think “crayons” because their first exposure to them is with a student grade version and that they are “hard to work with”. Misconceptions and bad first experiences abound. The truth is:
- Oil pastels are not geared for the standard “painter”.
- Oil pastels are dynamic, vivid, versatile and extremely forgiving.
- Standard oil and acrylic paint could only wish for the versatility of oil pastels.
- They will expand your range of artistic expression.
The medium is geared for those who love to work with their hands. You mush, squash, push and blend with your fingertips. You apply, texture, carve, scrape and cut away with your palette knife.
Let me re-introduce you to them.
Several original oil pastel paintings will be on display during the meeting. Attendees are encouraged to go to and review samples of my work prior to the meeting.
