Summary

Tempe magazine featured TAG member Becky Spradling for her gorgeous art and generous plans for supporting area agencies.

Becky Spradling is in the news for her beautiful art and her passion to share her art with the community.  This month a painting of hers was on the cover of the Tempe City Lifestyle magazine.  (February 2025).  The magazine ran a long story with charming photos of Becky surrounded by examples of her art.

The article, “Authentic Art” begins with the observation that Becky often describes her work as authentic.  Becky’s enthusiasm for art began in childhood.  She considered being an art major in college, but fear that she might not make a living as an artist deterred her.  Instead, she went into the field of mental health as a counselor and professional.  Even in that career, she kept an eye on art, taking workshops and classes.  Finally, art won over.  Becky has been a full-time artist for nearly a decade.

Becky’s art reflects her professional background in psychology, vis her “Beautiful People” series.  She aims to capture personality in her portraiture.  In her words: “I love to use my work to capture the essence of people.”  She is also deeply attracted to nature, particularly close-up views of plants and flowers – her paintings remind us of the extraordinary natural beauty all around us.  What is really striking is her ability to produce large-scale paintings of objects often-overlooked nature, an agave, flower petals, wild grasses, for example.

Members of the Tempe Artists Guild know Becky as an extremely talented and prolific painter.  Her White Petunias graces the home page of this site.  What brought her to the attention of the editors of Tempe City Lifestyle?  In this case, her good works, as well as her art may have played a role.  Becky received a Carmody Foundation “Art for Good” grant to create art for a November 2024 exhibit and charity art auction.  Proceeds benefited area mental-health agencies.

Becky has received prizes for her work and has had her work shown in a gallery.  Tempe Artists Guild is fortunate that she will be part of the Chandler Center for the Arts exhibition this month, and the Tempe History Museum exhibition in March.  Both are free exhibits open to the public during regular business hours.  Please take a few moments to visit both exhibitions and get better acquainted with Becky’s exquisite paintings.  And do enjoy Becky’s beautifully illustrated story this month in Tempe City Lifestyle, which you can find online at https://citylifestyle.com/tempe/issues/2025-02
