2016 TAG / CITY OF TEMPE ARTS MINI GRANT FOR SCHOOL MURAL

MAY 2016
TAG / CITY OF TEMPE  ARTS MINI GRANT FOR SCHOOL MURAL

TAG’S application for a City of Tempe Arts Grant was accepted in April 2016 and the project was completed in May 2016. Tempe matched a $500 donation by TAG to fund an arts project at the Tempe Academy of International Studies.

With the guidance of local professional artist Such Styles, seventy-five eighth grade students at this Tempe elementary school transformed the face of unused lockers into an amazing mural.

The  first graduating class of the Academy wanted to “leave their mark” after completing a rigorous three year program at the school. They chose to transform a wall of obsolete lockers into a trompe l’oeil style bookshelf facade. The bookshelf  features about 30 books with titles stenciled on the spines. Working on one of three teams (math/budget, stencil and painting), they painted a Class of 2016 mural that will provide inspiration to future classes.

This locker art is a permanent part of the school’s campus and notes the donation by TAG and the City of Tempe that supported the completion of the project.
